2011 Salsa el mariachi

mariachiThe latest Mexican dish from the boys at Salsa should really stir up Sherif Joe’s bonnet …..the steel Salsa El Mariachi! New dropouts and proven geometry make us say ” Mas cerveza por favor”. Ok, we actually don’t need an excuse to say that. $599 for one of these beauties and you’ll be shouting ” Ole!” all the way down the trail.

The El Mariachi has garnered rave reviews since it was first introduced in 2007. It’s proven geometry and premium ride quality have inspired new devotees to the 29’er movement.

Now featuring our Alternator dropout, the El Mariachi remains capable of both geared and singlespeed setups. The Alternator makes proper chain tensioning a snap while allowing hassle free quick-release wheel removal.

Our new Kung Fu tubing dramatically increases frame strength while preserving low weight and a killer ride quality.

Use the El Mariachi for your hardtail trail biking needs and local trail thrashing sessions. Consider adding our Enabler fork for more remote backcountry bikepacking adventures.

El Mariachi. If you wanna dance, you gotta pay the band.

2011 salsa ala carte

alacarteRage Cycles is happy to announce the birth….oh, no that’s not it. We did ,however, receive the next in Salsa’s lineup of 2011 frames. The picture doesn’t do it justice…this frame is cool beyond words, and at $599 it will be cool on your wallet too!

A veritable legend of the mountain bike world, the Ala Carte has proven itself for over 20 years.

The classic 26-inch wheeled steel frame is now capable of geared or singlespeed use, thanks to the new Alternator dropout design. The Alternator makes proper chain tensioning a snap while allowing hassle free quick-release wheel removal.

Our new Kung Fu tubing increases frame strength to new levels while maintaining low weight and ride quality.

The Ala Carte is nimble, but not twitchy, and both climbs and descends with aplomb. Use it for backcountry exploration and all-day trail rides, or for a few hours of singletrack success with your local crew.

Ala Carte. Best thing on the menu.

2010 Black Market Killswitch in da house!!!!

IMG_1020 The rumors are true, Black market bicycles made a full suspension frame called the killswitch. We got two of these bad boys to build up for some local riders, and both of them are stoked!!! Big thanks to Mondo over @ BM for working with us on getting these sweet frames that are in high demand. The killswitch is a 4 inch travel frame, that comes with a customed valved xfusion shock, seat collar, and headset for $1399. The one in the pic has a fox 831 that matches very well with the rear, profile cranks, hope/mavic wheels, saint brakes, and set up single speed. If I was building it up for myself, it would pretty much be the same. The guys  who had us build these (Manny and Scott) were nice enough to let us rip these steeds around the pumptrack. First ride around the track the bike feels so predictable, It rails in the burms, jumps very easy, and just feels like a solid whip. I can only imagine how nice this bike will execute the big jumps.  If anyone is interested Let us know, and we can try to obtain one of these super radical frames for you. The two guys that got these from us are way better riders since they got them, have gotten much better looking, and much more popular with the ladies. So, think about that for a while…..

The combination of this Ti tubing, Salsa geometry, and big wheels deliver a smooth ride on root and rock-strewn singletrack.

Whether you’re putting on the big boy (or girl) pants and taking on that NUE-series 100-miler, or just joining your local crew for an all-day trail riding beatdown, the El Mariachi Ti will keep you coming back for another delicious serving of dirt.

Spot!

Donald on the new Spot!Perhaps the most fascinating products I’ve seen at the show so far are the Spot belt-drive bikes. Spot brought 40 belt drive bikes to the outdoor demo and folks were riding around in them all day in the desert conditions. The feedback was very positive so I paid Spot a visit to get a deeper understanding of this new drivetrain.

Why now?

Folks have been dreaming about belt-drive for years. It has never come to fruition until now since a suitable belt has not been available until last year. Josh Ogle from Jericho made a big splash a few years ago when he showed off to Interbike with a belt-drive bike. But, the drivetrain was not reliable because there was no available belt ready to take the forces of the bike. But finally, a company called Gates Corporation released their belt drive system for bikes called the ‘Poly Chain Carbon Belt Drive System’

More info: http://www.gatesprograms.com/carbon/

The advantages of a belt drive system are low weight, noise and maintence. The weight of the belt is about 55 grams while a typical chain of the same length is about 255 grams. The system should be quieter as it experiences no squeaks, pops and rattles. And finally, the belt never needs to be oiled. It is more durable than a chain and never stretches. It’s lifespan is around 8000 miles.

On the minus side, no derailleur is possible with a belt drive so applications are limited to singlespeed and internal gear hub systems. Another difficulty is the frame needs to be specially designed for this system and allow a break in the chainstay. Since the belt cannot be broken, the frame needs to allow inserting of the belt in the chainstay. Finally, a belt drive system like this limits the user to very few sources for front and rear ‘belt wheels and cogs’.
